Greetings, I am Attorney María Mendoza, an immigration lawyer. I would like to share with you some recent news that has a significant impact. A few days ago, President Donald Trump fired 20 immigration judges without apparent reason. With the reduction in the number of judges, delays in cases are expected to increase even further, directly affecting those seeking legal immigration status in the United States.
According to statements from Matthew Biggs, president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, the Department of Justice fired 13 judges who had not yet been sworn in and five immigration judge assistants without prior notice. This was followed by two additional firings in the previous days. So far, the Executive Office for Immigration Review has not issued any further statements regarding this situation, leaving the future of the immigration judicial system uncertain.

Firings in the immigration judiciary system and their impact on cases.
The backlog of cases in immigration courts has been a growing problem in recent years. According to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse research group at Syracuse University, the immigration court backlog has exceeded 3 million. Despite bipartisan recognition of the need to hire more judges, the recent firings have only increased the workload and prolonged waiting times.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has estimated that, to start reducing the backlog of pending deportation cases, at least 300 additional immigration judges would be needed. To effectively follow up on nearly 2 million pending deportation cases over the next decade, at least 700 more judges would be required. Despite efforts by former President Joe Biden to increase the number of judges and improve the efficiency of the system, the shortage of judges remains a significant obstacle to the swift resolution of cases.
This issue is not new, as the immigration judicial system has faced long delays since the first Trump administration, causing many cases to take between five and eight years to resolve. The recent decision by the Trump administration could further prolong waiting times, creating uncertainty for thousands of people who depend on a judicial resolution for their immigration situation.

Outlook for the Future
While delays in judicial processes represent a concern for many immigrants, some believe that this situation could have a positive long-term effect. With the possibility of a change in presidential administration in the future, pending cases could benefit from more favorable immigration policies.
Trump’s recent measures have been seen as part of his strategy to implement mass deportations and reduce the size of the federal government. However, both lawyers and immigrant rights advocates have voiced support for increasing the number of judges and support staff to expedite judicial processes.
In light of these changes, it is recommended that affected immigrants stay informed and seek legal advice from qualified immigration lawyers to better navigate their cases, better understand their options, and anticipate potential paths forward in their judicial processes.
