A few days ago, during one of my live streams, I received tons of questions about the VAWA Visa: “Why is my case taking so long?”, “Why haven’t I received my USCIS receipt yet?”, “Is my case okay if they haven’t asked me for anything?”
I completely understand those concerns, mi gente. Waiting can be stressful, especially when it involves something as important as your safety, stability, and future in the United States.
Hi everyone! This is your friend, Immigration Attorney María Mendoza. Today, I want to explain what’s happening with VAWA visa approvals in 2025, what you can expect from the current process, and some key factors that are affecting USCIS case review times.
VAWA Visa Approval Times in 2025
During the first months of 2025, we’ve noticed longer wait and processing times for VAWA self-petitions (Form I-360). While in 2020 and 2021, decisions used to take about two years, today many cases are taking around four years, depending on the case and the USCIS office handling it.
This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem with your application. It simply means that USCIS is being more thorough in its review process, and the agency is handling a much higher number of humanitarian visas, like VAWA, T visas, and U visas.
On top of that, the recent government shutdown caused staffing reductions, which have delayed case processing even more.
In short, longer processing times are mainly due to the high case volume, stricter reviews, and staffing shortages. Even with these challenges, VAWA and other immigration cases are still moving forward.
USCIS has also started using new digital verification systems to detect fraud, verify signatures, and validate documents. While this improves security, it has slowed down the manual review of certain cases during the transition to these systems.

Delays in Receiving USCIS Receipts
Another issue we’re seeing, and one that’s worrying many applicants, is the delay in receiving USCIS receipts.
In the past, after filing a case, we would usually get the first receipts within a month. Around the holidays, it could take two or three months. But in 2025, some VAWA visas and other immigration receipts are taking up to six months to arrive.
Why is this happening?
- USCIS is redistributing workload across its service centers, which means some cases are being rerouted to other offices.
- In some cases, delays are related to signature and document verification, which requires extra review.
If your application was properly filed and you have proof of delivery, such as a USPS confirmation, don’t panic. These receipt delays are happening nationwide, and it doesn’t mean your case was rejected. It is simply waiting to be entered into the system.
Right now, patience and professional legal guidance are your best allies.
Original Signature Requests: Preventing Immigration Fraud
Another key update to note: USCIS is now requesting original signatures for certain forms, especially for VAWA, T visas, and employment visas like H-1B.
While USCIS still accepts scanned or electronic copies for many applications, some officers are now requiring original signatures to prevent immigration fraud.
Why? Because in the past year, USCIS has detected:
-
Forms are digitally altered without the applicant’s knowledge.
-
Unauthorized “notaries” are filing petitions with fake signatures.
-
Manipulated documents submitted through insecure platforms.
So, if you’re about to file your case, make sure your forms are properly signed and submitted through a trusted legal source.
At my office, we securely store all client files. So when USCIS requests original-signed documents, we have them ready. Your immigration attorney should always keep your original paperwork safely stored, too.
